How to write your health care assistant CV

Before you begin writing, make sure you know how to write a CV in a way that best emphasises your strengths.

To support patients as a healthcare assistant, you first need to carefully write a CV that convinces medical employers to invite you to a job interview. Here are three tips for making a job-winning healthcare assistant CV:

1. Set out your healthcare assistant CV based on your experience

Any information that’s most likely to impress the recruiter should be placed near the top of your CV. So the way you lay out your CV depends on how much healthcare experience you have.

For instance, if you’ve already worked in healthcare, your CV’s work experience section should go right below your personal statement. Arranging your CV sections like this emphasises your best selling point — your proven ability to handle the work you’re applying for.

But if you have no experience as a care worker or healthcare assistant, arrange the sections of your CV so your skills and education are on the first page. This layout is known as a skills-based CV, and it includes a skills section with:

  • your job-relevant skills as headers
  • 3–4 bullets describing each skill
  • examples of how you’ve used those skills, including hard numbers if possible

Here’s an example of a skills section entry on a skills-based CV for a health care assistant:

Old-Age Pensioner Care

  • Primary caregiver for elderly grandfather 4 days per week, with duties including feeding meals and changing bedpan
  • Pick up medicine prescriptions and administer proper doses 3 times daily
  • Follow physical therapist’s instructions to help maintain limited mobility

2. Highlight your most relevant healthcare skills and experience

Whether you use a standard CV format to emphasise your experience or a skills-based CV to focus on your skills and education, the information you should highlight depends on the job advert.

So if the job advert clearly shows the employer prefers healthcare assistants with experience in NHS hospitals, prioritise such experience on your CV, if possible. Even if you’re more proud of your accomplishments as a GP’s surgery assistant or as an in-home caregiver, the recruiter will be more impressed by your hospital work history.

Additionally, putting keywords from the job advert on your CV helps you get the recruiter’s attention.

Here are examples of hard skills and soft skills from healthcare assistant job descriptions that employers will be looking for in your CV:

  • Empathy
  • Medical equipment expertise
  • Physical strength
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Healthcare certifications

3. Write your personal statement last

The first part of your CV — after your name and contact details — is your CV’s personal statement. But you should write this 3–4 sentence CV summary last to ensure it includes the most job-specific skills and experience you have. Here’s why:

Because it’s the first section of your CV the employer will read, your personal statement should grab their attention with your most marketable abilities. And writing about your work and education history first helps you avoid forgetting relevant details that belong in your personal statement.
