How to write an information technology (IT) CV

Before you begin writing, make sure you know how to write a CV in a way that best emphasises your strengths.

Information technology (IT) professionals are in high demand in the UK, and IT skills are some of the most sought-after skills in the job market. So when you apply for IT jobs, you need to show that you’ve got the right skill set to succeed in your target role.

Here are some tips on how to write a job-winning IT CV:

1. Highlight your job-relevant IT skills

When IT recruiters read your CV, they’re trying to determine whether you have the specific IT hard and soft skills they need.

Hard skills are technical skills that are required for the job, such as software programming or hardware expertise. Soft skills, on the other hand, are non-technical skills that are also important for IT jobs, like problem solving or customer service.

Include both hard and soft skills on your CV. Doing so shows employers that you can handle the technical aspects of the job and work well with others. Here are some examples of skills to highlight on your CV for an IT job:

  • Coding skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Project management
  • Innovation
  • Troubleshooting
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Operating systems

In addition to including a list of your skills in your CV’s additional skills section, give examples of how you’ve used those skills in previous roles in your CV’s work experience section. For instance, if you’ve got experience with a particular programming language, describe significant projects you completed with that language.

2. Write an attention-grabbing personal statement

Your CV is often the first impression you make on hiring managers. So make sure your CV makes a strong impact. One way to do this is by writing an attention-grabbing CV personal statement.

A CV personal statement is a short paragraph (no more than 4–5 sentences) that appears at the top of your IT CV, just under your contact information. This paragraph should briefly describe your most job-relevant IT:

  • experience and skills
  • achievements
  • career goals

But remember to keep your personal statement concise and focused. If you try to cram too much information in, you’ll take away space from the most important information on your CV — your relevant work experience.

While there’s no one formula for writing a great CV personal statement, here are some tips you can follow to make sure yours is as effective as possible:

  • Avoid using cliches – Focus on conveying who you are as an IT professional and what makes you stand out
  • Provide specific examples of your achievements – Generic phrases like “proven track record” or “well-rounded” don’t tell hiring managers anything meaningful about you
  • Tailor your personal statement to each job – Include skills-based keywords the recruiter listed in the job description

3. Quantify your IT skills and achievements with hard numbers

When you’re applying for an IT job, quantifying your skills and experience is essential to demonstrate your value to employers. By including hard numbers, you give a clearer picture of your IT skills and experience.

Hard numbers can be especially helpful for highlighting your accomplishments, such as the:

  • number of users you supported
  • amount of money you saved your company
  • frequency of system updates you oversaw
  • size of the team you managed and the number of projects completed under your supervision

For instance, if you helped improve system performance by 10%, be sure to mention that on your CV for an IT job.
