How to write a team leader CV

Before you begin writing, make sure you know how to write a CV in a way that best emphasises your strengths.

If you want to land a team leader role, you’ll need to write a CV that impresses recruiters. A team leader is responsible for managing and motivating a team of employees, so it’s essential that your CV showcases your leadership skills.

Here’s how to make a standout team leader CV that gets you hired at your target company:

1. Give examples of your team leader skills in action

When you apply for a team leader job, emphasise your team leader skills on your CV. Recruiters look for evidence of both hard and soft skills, so it’s important to provide examples of both.

Hard skills are specific abilities or knowledge that you learn through training, such as:

  • the ability to use software programs: Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Slack
  • foreign language skills
  • project management
  • budgeting
  • resource allocation

Soft skills are interpersonal skills that help you lead your team and interact with upper management. Examples of soft skills to put on your team leader CV include:

2. Quantify your team leader CV job descriptions with hard numbers

A team leader is responsible for meeting deadlines, managing budgets, and achieving results. As such, the descriptions of your past jobs in your CV’s work experience section should include hard numbers that demonstrate your ability to get that specific job done.

For example, if the job advert mentions budget management, be sure to include the sizes of the budgets you’ve managed in your previous jobs. Likewise, if the position requirements emphasise meeting deadlines, you could highlight the percentage of projects you completed on schedule.
